TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – The Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) is taking steps to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its classrooms.
During a board meeting Tuesday night, officials discussed the first reading of a proposed AI policy, which aims to guide how the technology will be used in education.
The policy, which was approved to move forward for a second reading, states that AI will not replace jobs but will be used as a tool to enhance student learning. To ensure a smooth transition, the district has formed an AI task force, consisting of teachers, staff, parents, and community members, to provide guidance on implementation.
Currently, teachers are incorporating AI into some classroom activities, but student access to AI tools remains restricted. However, district officials hope students will be able to use the technology by August once the policy is finalized.
Jim Byrne, President of the Tucson Education Association, emphasized the importance of careful implementation.
“It’s pretty marvelous that it’s here now, but like any tool, if it’s going to be used for the betterment of human beings in this case, education it’s something we have to be careful of,” Byrne said.
Tracey Rowley, Senior Director of Educational Technology and Online Education for TUSD, echoed those sentiments, stressing that the district is taking a cautious and intentional approach.
“We’re not just going to open the floodgates for anything,” Rowley said. “We’re going to be very intentional and careful about what will be available to our students.”
The policy is now open for public comment, allowing community members to provide input over the next 30 days. A second reading will take place before final approval is considered.
