At first glance, Zrinka Stahuljak’s comparative literature class appears to be like any other in the humanities — a hundred UCLA undergraduates in a lecture hall talking about “The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha.”Yet it’s actually the first in the division to use a digital textbook created using artificial intelligence. The homework assignments? Also created using AI. And same for the discussion guides. While some colleges have moved…
Artificial intelligence (AI) will be used to help detect breast cancer in 30 sites across the country as part of a new trial to test how AI tools can be used to help early diagnosis, the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has announced on World Cancer Day. The technology will screen patients to identify changes in breast tissue that show signs of cancer. Currently two specialists are needed per mammogram screening, but AI would enable just one to complete the process, according to the DHSC. Nearly 700,000 women will take part in the trial, which is called EDITH,…

The use of AI has become fully integrated into many areas of our lives in the last 12 months, with people now using it for everything from planning holidays and writing letters to crafting wedding speeches. However, the widest use we’ve seen for it has been in the workplace. Whatever the sector, employees are finding ways of using generative AI software, such as ChatGPT or Microsoft 360 CoPilot for writing tasks, ideation or research, helping to make their jobs easier and to make workers more productive. “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”Arthur C Clarke’s words remind us that while AI might feel like magic — creating award-winning photography and outperforming humans in English understanding — it’s important for students and teachers to understand that there’s no “magic” involved, just algorithms, data and patterns. While these algorithms, data and patterns make AI possible, they also drive ethical concerns, including exacerbating the digital divide. This is where educators play a pivotal role in preparing AI-literate students for an evolving, AI-powered future workforce.Despite 69 per cent of Australian students already using AI chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Copilot,…
SALT LAKE CITY — Researchers have developed a new artificial intelligence tool that may one day be able to help doctors assess the risk a fetus has for serious complications like stillbirth. Dr. Nathan Blue with the University of Utah said that anytime a fetus is in the bottom 10% for growth, doctors become concerned about the possibility of stillbirth. “This could be a very serious thing that might require a lot of extra monitoring, concern, and early delivery to prevent stillbirth,” he said. On the other hand, sometimes, there’s nothing to worry about. “Most of those babies are actually…
Embracing new technology such as artificial intelligence and reform of public sector systems are among the actions Whitehall needs to take to boost productivity, the head of the Government spending watchdog will say on Tuesday. Gareth Davies, comptroller and auditor general of the National Audit Office (NAO) will use his annual speech in Parliament to warn also that “money is wasted” and public services “compromised” when there is a lack of preparedness for “increasingly likely events” such as pandemics or extreme weather.
