Poshmark Inc. is doubling down on generative artificial intelligence (AI), unveiling a tool designed to speed up the listing process for its sellers.
Dubbed Smart List AI, the new tool scans a seller’s photos to automatically generate key product details — such as its title, size, brand and color — so they don’t have to manually enter the information. On top of that, the AI tool specializes in search-optimized content, which could help listings gain more exposure.
The launch dovetails with Poshmark’s broader push to reshape its secondhand marketplace with AI. This comes as online merchants across the board race to integrate similar technologies.
Poshmark, which allows consumers to buy and sell used apparel, home goods and more, ranks No. 33 in Digital Commerce 360’s Global Online Marketplaces Database. The database ranks the 100 largest such marketplaces by third-party gross merchandise value (GMV).
Since its founding in 2011, the resale platform said it has grown to more than 130 million users, generating over $10 billion in GMV.
How does Poshmark’s Smart List AI work?
While other marketplaces, including eBay, have AI-generated listings, Poshmark claims its new tool cuts listing times by an average of 48%.
In beta testing, which began last fall, 82% of participants reported that Smart List AI saved them time compared to the platform’s classic listing system, according to Poshmark.
So what sets Smart List AI apart? Poshmark says the new tool can auto-generate essential product information — including the title, description and category — by tapping into market data, guiding users through the process. It only takes a single photo, after which sellers can review, change or add unique attributes. Sellers must add their own prices before publishing.
“In addition to saving time, Smart List AI enhances listing quality, boosts searchability, and increases buyer confidence on Poshmark,” the company said in a statement.
However, Poshmark acknowledges that poor image quality, dim lighting, or the complexity of an item can sometimes result in inaccuracies. On its website, the company recommends taking clear, well-lit photos from multiple angles against a contrasting background, as well as including a close-up of the tag. Sellers can manually edit any inaccurate details before finalizing the listing, it said.
As of this month, Smart List AI is available for iOS users in the U.S. and Canada, with an Android release already in progress, according to a Poshmark spokesperson.
Inside the tool’s AI engine
To work, Smart List AI pulls from multiple open-source AI models, which analyze images and identify attributes that correspond to text, the spokesperson told Digital Commerce 360.
This approach differs from Poshmark’s existing Posh Lens image search tool, which also relies on generative AI, but focuses specifically on visual search.
Similar to Google or Pinterest’s reverse image search features, Posh Lens lets buyers upload a photo and find listings that match — or closely match — the image. Since its 2023 debut, Posh Lens has indexed more than 100 million items, according to the company.
Poshmark characterizes Smart List AI and Posh Lens as early examples of its broader push to put AI at the heart of its platform. The company accelerated these efforts after its 2023 acquisition by South Korean search engine Naver for $1.2 billion.
Naver, which has already launched its own generative AI-driven searches, integrated its technology into Poshmark to power the new features. The tech giant has previously said its expertise in AI-based recommendations, search, and ecommerce technology could help drive Poshmark’s expansion.
“Our vision is to shape the future of resale by leveraging AI and innovative technologies to build a seamless, next-generation marketplace for our community to thrive,” Poshmark CEO and founder Manish Chandra said in a statement.
Next up: AI-enhanced Posh Shows
In the months ahead, Poshmark intends to weave AI capabilities into Posh Shows, its live-selling feature.
Launched in 2023 for U.S. and Canadian users, Posh Shows lets select sellers schedule and host livestreams to promote and auction items directly from their closets.
“We’re eager to integrate AI to not only make showcasing products easier and more entertaining, but completely reinventing the live-selling experience,” the spokesperson added. “AI will be a game changer for hosting and shopping live shows.”
